Barbara Cober
Lead Director: Chapelgate Presbyterian Church ESL Program

ESL Training

God has brought the World to our Doorstep! Every city and town in the United States is experiencing an influx of people from all around the world. How should the Church respond to this movement of people directed by our Sovereign God? With joyful obedience!! Through ESL (English as a Second Language) ministries, the Church can now obey two of Jesus' great commands in one ministry. We can literally reach the nations (Matthew 28:19-20) by loving our neighbor (Luke 10:27).

In this training you will learn:

1. How to start and maintain a fruitful ESL Ministry
2. How to teach ESL to adult Internationals including:
      a. How to place students in the proper fluency level classroom
      b. How to Lesson Plan using professionally written curriculum
      c. How to introduce new vocabulary & sentences using new vocabulary
      d. How to get the students to generate their own sentences
3. How to build authentic relationships with your students
4. How to share the Gospel both inside and outside the ESL Classroom

You do not need to speak a foreign language or be a professional teacher to be a volunteer ESL Teacher. All you need to do is speak English and love Jesus and we can teach you the rest. This training is interactive. During the training you will practice the skills that you are learning, create two lesson plans for different fluency levels and come away excited to serve the Lord through ESL Ministry.

Barbara began working with the ESL program at Chapelgate Presbyterian church in 1998. She was on the committee to explore and form a viable program that would serve the community. She started as one of the three advanced level teachers, and then assisted with administration with Nancy Booher for many years. She partnered with Nancy in conducting numerous MNA-ESL trainings and became an official trainer in 2015. She is now the lead director for Chapelgate's program. She finds working with the ESL team of volunteers very rewarding. She says "I am so encouraged when volunteers interact with ESL students and then say this is the ministry I've been praying to get involved with."
